Building LeadScout

Subject: Building LeadScout - find local businesses worth calling

Building LeadScout

Hi there! 👋

LeadScout came out of a problem I kept hitting myself: freelance prospecting is mostly admin. You search a town, open fifteen tabs, half-check whether each business is worth contacting, lose track of who you already emailed, and start again next week.

The tagline sums up the whole product: "Find local businesses worth calling."

Live: leadscout.work

What it does

LeadScout lets you discover nearby businesses, prioritise the best leads, and organise your cold outreach in one place. The flow is deliberately three steps:

  1. Search a location — pull the local businesses in an area
  2. Review and score them — decide who's actually worth your time
  3. Export your leads — take them straight into your outreach

It also tracks outreach status, so you don't email the same business twice and look like you're not paying attention.

Who it's for

It's built for outbound-focused freelancers who need better local prospecting — plus small agencies, local service businesses, and sales teams doing the same work with a spreadsheet and good intentions.

What I learned building it

1. The hard part is prioritisation, not data

Getting a list of businesses is easy. Deciding which twenty out of two hundred deserve a call is the thing people actually want help with, so scoring became the centre of the product rather than a nice-to-have.

2. One tool beats four tabs

Discovery, business context, prioritisation and outreach readiness were the four things I was doing in four different places. Collapsing them into one workflow was the whole value proposition — everything else is detail.

3. Ship the narrow version

It would have been easy to add a CRM, a mail sender, and a dashboard. It does local discovery and prioritisation well instead, and that constraint made it much easier to finish.

What's Next?

The site is up and taking early-access signups ahead of the full launch. Next up is sharpening the scoring signals and smoothing the export-to-outreach handoff.
